Concealed Handgun License Class Fees
New Applicants: $79.00 for Classroom, Range Fee, CHL Form 100, and Review Documents.
When you complete the class, you will leave the class with your CHL-100 Certificate of Completion that you can send to the Texas DPS Concealed Handgun Unit.
CHL Renewals no longer require class time or range time.
With renewals fingerprints and photos are no longer required.

What’s new with the Texas CHL Application Process
- You can now fill out and pay for your state application online.
- You are required to have your fingerprints done electronically. Manual fingerprints are no longer accepted. *Renewals no longer require new photos nor new fingerprints.
Processing your application online and having your fingerprints done electronically reduces errors that cause delays and speeds up the license issuing time frame when compared to the manual submission of a paper application.
Your State CHL Application
You will need to decided one of two options for submitting your application to the Texas DPS Concealed Handgun Unit.
Option A – Process Your State CHL Application Online
If you process your CHL application online you still need to take the training class, written exam, shooting proficiency test and have your fingerprints taken. To begin your online state application process click HERE https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/
You do not have to apply with the state before you take our class. After you take our class and pass both tests you have up to 12 months to submit your state application. However, we don’t recommend you wait that long.
Option B – Process Your State CHL Application Manually
You can still process your CHL application the old fashion way by doing it manually.
- Go to the state website and download the PDF version of the application. Print it, follow included instructions, and mail in.
- You do NOT have to process you state application before you take the class.
Not sure what to fill out in the packet then just bring it with you to your training class for assistance.
Fingerprinting
As of March 1, 2011 fingerprints for CHL applicants will ONLY be accepted electronically.
Having your fingerprints taken electronically is mandatory. Manual or paper fingerprints will no longer be accepted. The nearest electronic fingerprinting state is in Pearland.
Before you schedule an appointment for fingerprinting you must apply with the state first. If you apply online you will need the receipt number from the application to enter into the L1-Solutions fingerprint online reservation system. To make a fingerprinting appointment, click HERE
NOTE there is a fingerprinting location in Lake Jackson.
Training Class
The Texas Concealed Handgun License Class is a One Day Class.
- Classroom fee
- Range fee
- Form CHL100 – form stating you passed both the written exam and shooting proficiency.
You will be required to qualify with your handgun!
- Bring your UNLOADED handgun and UNLOADED magazine(s) in a bag or case.
- If possible, leave your handgun in your vehicle until the instructor instructs you to bring the handgun to the shooting range.
- If you cannot leave your handgun in your vehicle, bring your unloaded handgun unloaded magazine and your ammo to the classroom. The Instructor will store your handgun and ammo in our Gun Cabinet. The Gun Cabinet is secure and is in the classroom. The instructor will give you your handgun and ammo when it is time for you to qualify.
- Only standard handgun calibers can be shot on our range. If you pistol shoots a different caliber bullet then listed below contact us to verify for approval.
- .32 ACP
- .380 ACP
- 9mm
- .357 Magnum
- .357 Sig
- .40ACP
- .45ACP
- Bring 50 rounds for the qualification exercise.
- Bring extra ammo in case you do not qualify the first time.
- There will NOT be time to sight in your pistol.
- Revolver or Semi-Automatic
- You can qualify with a Semi-Automatic or Non-Semi-Automatic (revolver)
- You can carry either with your license
On the range, you will shoot the following qualification:
- From a distance of 3 Yards:
- 1 shot in 2 seconds (5 times)
- 2 shots in 3 seconds (5 times)
- 5 shots in 10 seconds (1 time)
- From a distance of 7 Yards:
- 5 shots in 10 seconds (1 time)
- 2 shots in 4 seconds ( 1 time)
- 3 shots in 6 seconds (1 time)
- 1 shot in 3 seconds (5 times)
- 5 shots in 15 seconds (1 time)
- From a distance of 15 yards:
- 2 shots in 6 seconds (1 time)
- 3 shots in 9 seconds (1 time)
- 5 shots in 15 seconds (1 time)
If you have your Application Packet, bring it to class. If you do not have your Application Packet, the instructor will give you a Packet when you arrive at the classroom unless you have processed your application online.
